Rasterbator

Aug 04 2010

So, I asked the Cr0ak to make me a site banner last night. Reluctantly, he agreed. I still owe him a GUI to edit JA2 character profiles (I’ve been slacking) so he asked me to find an image for him to rasterbate.

WTF is rasterbate, I thought. To be honest, my mind slipped into some crudeness. So I google’d it and this is what I got. [Links and Images after the cut]

Moon Man

Reservoir Dogs

Insert an image, tell it how big you want it and it splits it into pages to fill that size. Send the pages to your local print shop (shout out to Van Pelt’s), and you’re off to the races. A huge poster for the fraction of the cost of actually buying (or printing) a huge custom poster.

What an awesome program. Apparently it has been around for years (over 5, which makes it almost ancient in the relative Interwebs timeline) and is available in two forms:

Online Version (be careful – heavy server load… always)

http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/

Offline Version (be careful – 5 years of accumulated comment spam)

http://arje.net/rasterbator

Just upload an image and see what it spits out. According to the Cr0ak, text doesn’t scale well, and unless you have excess cash colour to black and white can be an issue.

I’ve got a sweet idea for a mural for the little Princess’ room now, saving us some good coin.

Text probably isn’t so bad if you’re doing something the size of an entire wall. For the stuff I was looking at, I was checking like… 3 panel comics maybe 12 feet long, and even at a 5mm dot size, text was hard to read. Working on the banner as we speak.
